Batch 128 Award Winning Wenshan Baozhong Tea Tasting Notes | Eco-Cha Tea Club

Wenshan Baozhong Tea Gongfu Brew

Batch 128 of the Eco-Cha Tea Club is an Award Winning Wenshan Baozhong Tea from Pinglin, Taiwan. Check the sourcing blogpost for the full background story. This tea is from our ongoing source, and when possible, we like to offer a competition grade example of Wenshan Baozhong Tea to the tea club to represent this classic tea from Taiwan. Wenshan Baozhong has a history tea production in northern Taiwan dating back to the mid-1800's. It was the primary type of tea exported from Taiwan up until WWII. Since then, it has held its own niche on the domestic market, but is still relatively unknown among the international tea community.

The most distinctive character of Wenshan Baozhong Tea is its freshness that results from maintaining the integrity of the leaves. The delicate processing methods only lightly oxidize the constituents within the tea leaves, which are only gently curled and dried — as opposed to tightly rolled.

The vibrant quality of the brewed tea is truly distinctive. It's substantial yet delicate, complex, and smooth. It offers  prominently floral and herbal notes, with a "deep green" quality that is difficult to describe. So, for lack of a better way of putting it, Wenshan Baozhong has something that no other tea we've tasted has in its aromatic and flavor profile.

It's got a soft, nourishing quality while being vibrant and fresh at the same time. This delicate nudging the composition of the fresh leaves further beyond a fully green tea, but much less than most other partially oxidized teas that fall within the Oolong spectrum, puts it on a pedestal of its own. It's true, we have a particular respect and appreciation for this classic specialty tea from Taiwan! Check the tasting video for the full review.
